Number talks, developed by Ruth Parker, are an activity you can do with your kids on a walk or in a moment you are sitting together. They are a wonderful way to develop number flexibility with your students. Many kids learn an algorithm for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, but it is also valuable for students to develop an understanding of how numbers work.
The video below shows an example of Kristina doing a number talk at home with her kids. They wrote down their solutions, but you can just chat about them over the dinner table. We are also including here a few links to a variety of number talk resources that are usually for the classroom, but you might enjoy. In the video from the online course, you can see some great visual connections!
